This week as Monet & Me teaches art classes for kids we turn our study to Joan Miro.
Miro was born in the heart of old Barcelona in a bedroom whose ceiling was covered with stars. Miro enrolled at Llotja, the art school frequented by Pablo Picasso 12 years earlier. He first learned to draw with his eyes closed to discover forms through touch. Miro once said, “I work a lot with my fingers: I have to sink into the physical reality…of color. I need to be dirty from head to foot.”
His work can be classified as surrealistic, meaning inspired from the subconscious mind. “I would like my work to be like a poem put into music by a painter.” In 1974, Miró created a tapestry for the World Trade Center in New York City together with the Catalan artist Josep Royo.
Thinking of traveling to Spain? View his work at the Miro Foundation in Barcelona, http://www.fundaciomiro-bcn.org/fundaciojoanmiro.php?idioma=2! If you and the kids are home this summer be sure and check out Monet & Me’s exciting Art Summer Camps coming soon to the site: www.monetandme.com!
